November 5, 2010:  Brookview Elementary in Brook Park, Ohio, is the host site for the COSI On Wheels show Launch Into Space.  Derek Bringardner is prepared to shock and amaze this school with his fire and ice demos in the full school assembly and continue to amaze them during their hands-on sessions for the rest of the day!

Today Derek will present for the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students at Brookview.  As the students entered into the gym, Derek greeted them with high-fives and got them excited about what was to come.  The air was electric with the song “Space Jam” playing and Derek showing off the latest and greatest dance moves……or at least to him they were the latest and greatest.

The assembly starts off with an introduction to COSI and to Space.  After explaining that everything is made of molecules, Derek used liquid nitrogen to demonstrate a rocket launch (a 20 oz pop bottle).  The students were very excited to see the bottle shoot through the air towards their gym’s ceiling.

Soon after, Derek got the help of one of the teachers in the school to demonstrate the importance of a properly pressurized space suit.  This is always a school favorite.  Derek then wrapped the program up with a heat test with an actual shuttle tile and a blowtorch!  Very exciting!

It is always a pleasure to see the Outreach Educators perform and educate out in the schools.  I always learn some new tips and tricks from them when presenting to all of these different students and schools.  Derek did an outstanding job today and the students loved him…as always.  Great job, Derek!

P.S.  If you want some additional “scatty” facts, just ask Derek how they go to the bathroom in space…
