A Royal Audience, Ohio Style

August 6, 2012
Post by Joe Butler

With everyone occupied by the Olympics, it’s easy to forget that the British aren’t the only folks with royalty. While I was down in Gallipolis, Ohio, visiting HOPE Intervention with our Incredible Human Machine program, some local royalty came out to help with the day.

Abby Hammond (left) and Michaela Hall (right) are two of the Gallia County Fair Princesses competing to become the Gallia County Fair Queen. These two royal ladies came out and helped run a few of our activities for the group of Autistic students and their families that came to the HOPE Family Fun Day. The princesses even rolled up their sashes and helped set-up, tear down and even helped load the truck at the end of the day. You won’t ever see the Queen Mum or Kate Middleton loading up a truck. This week Abby will be showing her goats at the fair while Michaela will be showcasing her seamstress skills.

Thanks again to these American Princesses, Julie Short and all the other volunteers at HOPE Intervention for a great time!

COSI On Wheels at the National Night Out Festival

August 17, 2011

Post by Perrin Shepherd

COSI was present during the 7th Annual National Night Out Festival at South Ogden Avenue in Columbus, Ohio.

National Night Out is a nationwide event that invites residents to stand with community leaders and local police to give crime a “going away party.” There are over 10,000 communities that participate in this event.

For the community on South Ogden Avenue, it was a way to bring the community closer together. And what’s a better way than to have COSI On Wheels’ Science Spot bring some enjoyable hands-on science? COSI On Wheels was able to teach science, bring COSI closer to their community, and let all of the South Ogden community have fun at the same time.

I know for me, events like these make COSI On Wheels a little more special.

As COSI On Wheels enters into the summer travel season, elementary schools take the summer off and COSI hits the road visiting many of the over 100 fairs, festivals, and special events in our region every summer.  Columbus hosts a fair number of large community festivals and I had the opportunity to take our Science Spot program to one such event.

Columbus, Ohio, hosts one of the largest gay pride festivals in the country, with over 150,000 people from all over the US attending. COSI displayed nearly 200 square feet of science goodness at this event.  Seeing over 2,000 people in the booth sent an awesome message to the city and the Midwest that COSI is a big supporter of many diverse communities – including the GLBT community.

Having the opportunity to educate and entertain thousands of families and friends over a 25-hour period was exhausting but rewarding.
